The château d’Angers, built upon the remains of a Neolithic and later Gallo-Roman settlement, overhangs the river Maine. This structure unites two architectural works, which merge one into the other: Saint Louis’ fortress, with its gigantic towers and massive enclosing walls, and the château of the Anjou dynastic court, with its elegant buildings and pleasant gardens. The famous “Apocalypse Tapestry”, commissioned towards the end of the 14th century by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, is displayed in a gallery redesigned in 1996.
